Floods and Environmental Contamination

The transport and mixing of environmental contaminants, especially during flood events, can create or enhance risks to ecosystems and to human health.  We are currently researching the transport of lead (Pb) and other heavy minerals in the Lower Meramec River, near St Louis, MO.  The legacy of over a century of lead mining in the "Old Missouri Lead Belt" is resulting in heavy metals reaching ecosystems and human populations far downstream of the original mining activities, and likely reaching the Mississippi River.
